A quilter's favourite - the twelve inch quilt block. These are probably the most commonly used. The measurements divide easily and evenly for quick calculations. Whether the goal is a bed-sized quilt or a cuddle quilt in an afghan size, a 12" quilt block is your go-to choice.

The Thunder and Lightning quilt block is a nine patch design which will give you lots of practice sewing half square triangles to create this wonderful pattern.

But, that's not all. You will also need to sew a few flying geese units and a square in a square patch for the centre of the block. All in all, this is a perfect choice for a new quilter to construct a block that is not seen as frequently as others, but still gives lots of opportunity to make commonly used patches in a different design.
