Four patch quilt blocks are constructed of four quadrants. Single patches or several pieced patches can be used in each quadrant of a quilt block. Each quadrant will be one quarter of the quilt block.
Four patch quilt blocks can be in any category of difficulty from easy to intermediate or challenging. The difference in the difficulty is based on the number of pieces that make up each quadrant.

The Thrifty Block is a great starting block for beginner quilters. It is made entirely of squares but the arrangement of those squares is what creates the interesting design when several quilt blocks are joined together. This block introduces you to four patches (the little "checkerboard" units) which are so commonly used in many quilts.
This quilt block can be colour coordinated using limited colours or, as in the example shown, it is a great way to use up your scraps. Thrifty Block is often used as an alternate block in a quilt layout to create a secondary design.
The sample quilts in the illustrations show how to create an overall effect of direction simply by rotating the quilt blocks or setting them on point.
