There is no question that 12" quilt blocks are the most commonly used. But at times, you want to make a block that is a little smaller and uses easy math. Enter the 9 inch block -- not too big and not too small, but just fits the bill.

The Swamp Angel quilt block is a nine patch design that will look familiar to quilters.

The quilt layout shown below on the left brings the eye to the star motif as the focus. Sashing strips separating the blocks give an extra element to the design.

Setting the blocks side by side creates a design of meandering rows over the diagonal of the quilt as evidenced in the quilt layout on the right.
