Five Patch quilt blocks are usually used when you are working out the measurements for your quilt in units of fives or tens -- and are a favourite of many. The math is simple and fast. These quilt blocks are designed on a grid of 25 -- 5 patches by 5 patches -- hence the name.

The Sister's Choice quilt block is one of my favourites. It contains simple patches -- only the square and half square triangle units -- but the arrangement of the colours you choose can give a totally different look to the design. This design is a five patch because it is made on a 5 x 5 grid.
The two sample quilts shown both use the quilt blocks set on point. However, note the difference by simply making different choices as to whether to use sashing, setting triangles and different fabric placement.
