For those quilters wanting a little more of a challenge, five inch quilt blocks might be the answer -- smaller blocks usually means more blocks to make. Another reason for using five inch blocks is to create a secondary pattern. By using 4 blocks and rotating each of them, you get a different larger quilt block. These larger blocks can then be laid out in variety of ways to make some very interesting original designs.
Shimmer
Free Quilt Block Pattern
The Shimmer quilt block is a wonderful choice for a beginner quilter.
This five patch design features flying geese patches, (my favourite patch) as well as creating "blade" points using the sew and flip method for creating the triangle pieces at the tips of the blades. Easy, peasy. Depending on your colour placement you can create several different versions of this block - perhaps featuring the star in the centre rather than the pinwheels. It's all up to your imagination.
