Nine Patch Uneven Nine Patch
The Uneven Nine Patch style of quilt block is so named because not all of the nine individual patches are the same size as is the case in a regular nine patch quilt block. This style of quilt block is often used in 10" quilt block to make the math easier, but you will find this construction method in many other quilt blocks as well.

Sample Quilt Layouts

Two very different results are shown in these two sample quilt layouts featuring the Rocky Mountain Chain quilt block.

The quilt layout illustrated on the left sets the quilt blocks side by side and separates them with sashing strips. By utilizing the same fabric for the sashing as the background fabric of the block, the stars seem to float in the night sky. Using "cornerstones" of a bright yellow in the sashing strips, gives the appearace of tiny stars twinkling in the distance.

The quilt layout featured on the right sets the blocks diagonally, and also uses the same idea of the sashing strips in the same background colour. The extra blank blocks give you a place to show off a lovely quilting design, while the centre section of the four pieced blocks give an additional focal point for the quilt.
