There is no question that 12" quilt blocks are the most commonly used. But at times, you want to make a block that is a little smaller and uses easy math. Enter the 9 inch block -- not too big and not too small, but just fits the bill.

The Road to Mississippi quilt block is one of many "road" quilt blocks. Links to many of these are shown below.

Both of the quilt layouts illustrated set the blocks on point with very different outcomes. On the left, I think this looks like a "plaid" style of quilt, with sashing strips as an extra element to enhance this quilt design.

The quilt layout pictured on the right adds corner triangles to each block to produce a larger block. By changing up the fabric selections for these new, large triangles on the block corners, the resultant quilt has an overall "colour blocking" effect. This is an easy method to incorporate to increase the size of this (or any) quilt as well as add a striking design element.
