Larger quilt blocks offer the incentive that there are less to make to produce your quilt. When time is limited, this size of block is your best friend. A second feature is that you can try a more difficult design as the pieces may be many, but the sizes of the patches are easy to work with. A win-win all around.

Northumberland Star

Free Quilt Block Pattern

Although the Northumberland Star quilt block is technically an eight patch design (since it is created on an 8 x 8 grid), it is more commonly constructed as a four patch, simply for ease in the sewing.

This lovely star quilt block features mainly half square triangles, (in two different sizes) and a few quarter square triangles to finish up this striking design.
