For those quilters wanting a little more of a challenge, five inch quilt blocks might be the answer -- smaller blocks usually means more blocks to make. Another reason for using five inch blocks is to create a secondary pattern. By using 4 blocks and rotating each of them, you get a different larger quilt block. These larger blocks can then be laid out in variety of ways to make some very interesting original designs.
Nine Patch Star
Free Quilt Block Pattern
The Nine Patch Star quilt block is a good choice for a new quilter as it contains simple patches and give ample opportunities for practice on the most commonly used patch in quiltmaking -- the half square triangle.
A simple nine patch is featured in the centre of the design, but actually, the whole block, even though it is technically a five patch, (due to its being designed on a 5 x 5 grid) is sewn as an uneven nine patch for ease in the construction. Hopefully, this is not totally confusing as this is an easy block to make.
