There is no question that 12" quilt blocks are the most commonly used. But at times, you want to make a block that is a little smaller and uses easy math. Enter the 9 inch block -- not too big and not too small, but just fits the bill.

The Nested Triangles quilt block features half square triangles in two different sizes.

The quilt layout shown on the left takes advantage of the directional nature of the block to create a secondary design of star (at least to my eyes).

The quilt layout illustrated on the right also rotates many of the blocks to create a totally different geometric design.
