There is no question that 12" quilt blocks are the most commonly used. But at times, you want to make a block that is a little smaller and uses easy math. Enter the 9 inch block -- not too big and not too small, but just fits the bill.
Moonlight Star
Free Quilt Block Pattern
The Moonlight Star quilt block is a nine patch design featuring two pieced patches -- half square triangles and an often underused patch (at least in my opinion) called the square in a square.
This sample block below is created with the night sky in mind, and therefore I used a dark navy for the background colour. The star in the block is designed using three different shades of yellow/orange to indicate the burning star and its rays.
