BLOCKS by SIZE 9" Quilt Blocks

There is no question that 12" quilt blocks are the most commonly used. But at times, you want to make a block that is a little smaller and uses easy math. Enter the 9 inch block -- not too big and not too small, but just fits the bill.

Friendship Star - Basic

Sample Quilt Layouts

The Friendship Star - Basic is a favourite nine patch block among quilters. Firstly, it is easy to construct and secondly, depending on how you choose a quilt layout for your blocks, often you will see a secondary pattern emerge.

The quilt layout shown on the left utilizes a simple side by side setting of the blocks. This creates the optical illusion of a "ribbon" strung between the stars. (This quilt block is also called Ribbon Star for that reason.) The quilt on the right uses an on point block setting with sashing strips separating the blocks and adds a new colour for some "pizzazz" in the quilt.
