BLOCKS by SIZE | 15" Quilt Blocks |
Do you have a aversion to math? Well then the 15" inch quilt block is a welcome choice as the patches are designed in divisions and multiples of fives for ease. An added bonus is that by making a larger block, your quilt will go together in no time as there are less blocks to make.
Flying Square
Free Quilt Block Pattern
The Flying Square quilt block could not be an easier choice for a new quiltmaker, or as a tool for those quilting teachers looking for something new to use in their repertoire of blocks.
This five patch design is constructed entirely using only squares. You, as the quiltmaker, have the option to sew these square patches as five rows of five, but my perferred method, as shown in the quilt block pattern, is to sew it as an uneven nine patch, since I believe it is easier to work with "chunks" rather than individual rows. However, you choose what is the favourite method for yourself.
I noticed right away, that this block gives the look of a plaid or tartan, and so I chose colours of one of the many tartans for my family name. Mine is following one the Johnson samples, but who knew there would be so many for each clan? Check out the resultant quilts on the following page.
