Nine Patch Uneven Nine Patch
The Uneven Nine Patch style of quilt block is so named because not all of the nine individual patches are the same size as is the case in a regular nine patch quilt block. This style of quilt block is often used in 10" quilt block to make the math easier, but you will find this construction method in many other quilt blocks as well.

Firewheel

Sample Quilt Layouts

The Firewheel quilt block is an eight patch but sewn (for ease in construction) as an uneven nine patch. It contains only the simplest of pieced patches -- half square triangles and flying geese.

The two sample quilt layouts shown below both use an on point setting of the blocks. But, with different placement of the pieced blocks as well as the blank blocks, you achieve two very different and striking quilts. My goal was to represent lots of "wheels of fire" in the night sky and I am pleased with the outcome.
