The two sample quilt layouts shown below are both designed using an on point setting of the blocks, but could not look more different.

The quilt layout featured on the left uses extra blank blocks as a method of introducing more of a colour splash to the design. These blank blocks give the quilter a spot to showcase a beautiful quilting design.

The quilt layout illustrated on the right sets full and half blocks on the diagonal and separates them with sashing strips. This sashing, with the cornerstones, gives an additional, yet subtle design element to the final quilt.
