The half square triangle unit is probably the most commonly used patch in a quilt block -- well it is second only to the square. It is made simply with two triangles, filling up half the square each -- hence the name. Take a quick look through this website, or in any quilting magazine, and you will start to notice that this half square triangle, regardless of its size, is present in more quilts than not.

The Chinese Puzzle quilt block is comprised of half square triangles and a few quarter square triangles.
The interest in the block is how the pieces go together to make up the design. I have chosen only three fabrics to use in this block -- a dark, a light and a medium value fabric. However, you could also choose to use a variety of darks, lights and medium value fabrics to make a scrappy version of this block. (Regular followers of this website will know that scrappy quilts are my favourites.)
The sample quilts illustrated both use rotations of the blocks by 90 degrees. The quilt on the right also reverses the placement of the focus fabrics to produce mirror image blocks and as a result, a very different quilt. Only your imagination can limit the design of your own quilt.
