Cat's Cradle

Free Quilt Block Pattern

The version shown here of the Cat's Cradle quilt block is a scrappy version, meaning that it is made of of several different fabrics to make the whole block. This is a great way to use up any scraps in your quilt fabric stash, although you can certainly choose to make this using two different fabrics, one light and one darker to show the contrast in the pieces.

The quilt block is a nine patch featuring half square triangles. It is an easy to intermediate level block, but can prove challenging if you do not take care with your seam allowances.

The two sample quilts illustrated show you that you can make some really interesting design arrangements using this block. Since the block is directional, by rotating some or many of the blocks, you can create all sorts of variations. And, the samples show you just how very different the quilt can look by whether you choose to have a dark or light background fabric.
