There is no question that 12" quilt blocks are the most commonly used. But at times, you want to make a block that is a little smaller and uses easy math. Enter the 9 inch block -- not too big and not too small, but just fits the bill.

The Brasstown Star quilt block is a simple nine patch design -- (usually the first type of block to learn) -- so it would be a wonderful choice for a beginner quilter.
This block features a patch that is (in my opinion), very underused unit -- the square in a square patch, allowing for all sorts of interesting interpretations. In this case, half of the half square triangle cut pieces needed for this unit are made using the background colour fabric while and the other pieces are used in a different fabric to form the points of the centre star. All in all, a fun and easy block to make.
