BLOCKS by SIZE 5" Quilt Blocks

For those quilters wanting a little more of a challenge, five inch quilt blocks might be the answer -- smaller blocks usually means more blocks to make. Another reason for using five inch blocks is to create a secondary pattern. By using 4 blocks and rotating each of them, you get a different larger quilt block. These larger blocks can then be laid out in variety of ways to make some very interesting original designs.

Sample Quilt Layouts

The Alpine Cross quilt block is an easy block to sew and that makes it that much more fun to design your final quilt, as it goes together quickly.

The quilt layout featured below on the left continues with the darker fabric as a focus, which gives a unique vertical design when the blocks are placed on point.

The quilt layout illustrated on the right sets the blocks side by side producing a look of stars (at least it does to me) as a subtle, secondary design.
