Do you want to make a large quilt, but don't have a lot of time? The 14" inch quilt block might be your choice. Larger sized blocks equal less blocks to make and the "finish line" is in sight faster. Fourteen inch blocks are typically made as seven patches, as they are designed on a 7 x 7 grid.
The Abe Lincoln's Platform quilt block is an easy one to construct and the quilts designed with this block are simple to sew as well. If you choose to set your quilt blocks in the fashion of either of the sample quilts shown below, I believe your quilt will show a sort of "plaid" effect as well -- at least that is what I interpret from the images.
